Professor B Math

Teaching math was not in my homeschooling fantasy...you know - the one where "all-my-children-are-gathered-around-eagerly-awaiting-the-precious-drops-of-wisdom-and-instruction-dripping-from-my lips"...  The reality is more like this - "That's not helping me mom!".

If you can relate, Professor B may be just what you're looking for!  Here's help with actual Math Instruction, not just the drill and practice parts!

Here's a description from the website:

"Our program, "Mathematics Power Learning,", have thoroughly structured the content of arithmetic as a developmental, contextual flow (like a story). This allows children's minds to assimilate its content more quickly (in the same natural way they assimilate stories rapidly) without any gaps in their knowledge.

Kindergarten and first graders mastering the lower/higher addition/subtraction facts and reading numbers in the hundreds of trillions (fifteen-digit numbers).  Second graders mastering all multiplication facts and long division.  Fifth graders mastering “seventh grade math. Master 3 years of instruction in 1 year!”

There are 3 levels - find your proper starting point with a FREE Placement Test

LEVEL I
Pre-k though 2nd graders and remediation of older learners. Introduction to Addition/Subtraction Facts – Counting to One Hundred – Lower Addition and Subtraction – Higher Addition and Subtraction – Place Value Fractional Parts & Order – Time – Money

LEVEL II
3rd grade through 5th grade and remediation of older learners.Multiplication/Division Facts and Problem Solving – Introduction to Fractions – Fractional Equivalence – Addition and Subtraction Fractions

LEVEL III
6th through 8th grades and remediation of older learners.Multiplication/Division of Fractions – Decimals – Percents

Cost:

One Level - $20 per month
Two Levels (at the same time) - 2nd level is  $15 per month
Three Levels (at the same time) - 3rd level is $10 per month

Or - NEW PRICE - Pay in advance: $100 for 3 years access to each level.  Call 678-765-6655 while website is being updated!

The Bentz Test Laboratory has several "math brained" testers and several who are more like me..."not so math brained" testers.
My first tester has struggled with math concepts consistently since the very beginning.  After pinpointing a weak spot - telling time, we sat down to work through Professor B together.  This is not a program to let your child work independently on, you need to be there with them for it to be effective.  It also has no sound, you read the screen and listen to their responses (designed this way on purpose - you can read their philosophy here).  At first, my tester did not like how slow or repetitive the program was... but, I have to tell you - she can tell time now!! Believe me, we have been working on this skill for what seems like a long TIME, and just a few minutes with Professor B has gotten her able to completely tell time - hours/minutes, everything!

My older testers are more "math brained" and really thought the Professor B was a little too childish for them, plus - since they have math brains - the repetitive instruction was too slow for them.

I like this program.  It focuses on the math instruction, the part I need the most help with.  I like that you have to work together with your child - one of the biggest benefits (maybe I'll actually master those concepts after all these years...).  It's a very simple presentation - no distractions, rewards or games.

I'm not sure it's a good fit for a large family though.  The cost is rather high, and the time committment (while I like that part) would get substantial with multiple children using it.

But, if you have hit a wall in teaching a math concept - I strongly encourage you to give Professor B a try - they offer a free trial lesson.

Considering God's Creation

Considering God's Creation by Eagles Wings
(I was sent a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest opinion as part of the TOS Review Crew).

First, I have to say - I LOVE this company's products! I have almost everything they have ever published on my shelves... So, reviewing this was a treat!

Considering God’s Creation is available for $29.95 on the Eagle’s Wings website, and includes the Teacher’s Manual, Student Workbook, and audio CD. An additional workbook can be purchased separately if you have more than one student using this program for $13.95, and a replacement CD is also available for $3.00.

You can cover all areas of Science study, with multiple ages, all with this one book! It has a distinctly Christian worldview, and just plain good science as well. If you like the notebooking style of study (which we do) you will love this product!

One of the things I appreciate most about this curriculum, is the low amount of teacher prep time needed. You can just open it and dive right in. You can also use it to supplement other science programs you may be using because it is so easy to implement.

We used the Skeleton cut-outs with our Co-op during our Anatomy and Physiology class (which was using Apologia). So, it's more than just a stand alone course - it's a must have resource!

You will want to check out their other products as well. Eagle’s Wings carries Christian educational products for other subject areas too. Be sure to check out their products page HERE

Word Qwerty by Talking Fingers

Word Qwerty by Talking Fingers

Wordy Qwerty, a software program by Talking Fingers, teaches children spelling rules through a series of engaging lessons and activities. The intended age range is 7-9 (2nd-3rd grade). It is available as an online option, or a CD-Rom.

The hosts, two talking keyboards (one a computer keyboard, the other a piano keyboard) encourage your child to earn spheres and points to help make a Marveleous Music Machine, your student is taught to recognize patterns in each lesson and then is provided with the rule. A catchy song for each rule is included to help aid in retention.

Each lesson has six activities and games for your student to complete: Patterns Game, Karaoke, Recycler, Pop-a-Word, Write Stories, and Read Stories. The games are engaging and give the student more practice with the rule. Full game descriptions are available at the website.

You can try it out for Free here

Wordy Qwerty is another resource for solid teaching of the spelling rules for beginning spellers, as well as a remediation tool for older students. A online license is available as a 1-year license for 1 user at $25, up to 5 users for $71.25. A CD-Rom version, complete with an audio CD of the spelling rule songs, is available for $35. Visit the Talking Fingers website to learn more or to purchase.

My two daughters...I like to call them "Sugar" and "Spice" were are official Bentz testers for this product.

They both loved playing it, loved the songs, loved the characters...Love, love, love.

"Sugar" is older and reading well - but spells terribly. So, I thought - this will be good practice for her. While she enjoyed her time in the test laboratory with Word Qwerty, I didn't see much improvement over in the school room.

However, "Spice" literally begged to do her "computer time" every day. And, to my surprise - she retained alot of this information - and took it to the schoolroom with her!

So, my lesson for you is...know your children's learning styles!

Word Qwerty may be just the tool you need...

Mad Dog Math

Mad Dog Math-

Designed to model the method Julie Kotoff, a veteran teacher and administrator, used in her 3rd grade classroom – this program keeps track of students work, and moves them progressively through levels until they become “Mad Dog Top Dogs” at math.

Students from K-grade 5 are encouraged to spend 10 minutes each day practicing with Ruff, the program’s mascot. (who was named after Julie’s beloved Golden Retriever, Mad Dog sounds better than Cute Dog...don't you think?)

The program has 4 levels. Level 1 and 2 are addition and subtraction facts. Level 3 is multiplication and division, and the challenge level mixes all the operations for what is called “mutt math” and mixes operations for “kennel trouble”.

The children can time themselves with two minute, one minute and 30 second time limits. If they complete all the levels in under two minutes, they receive a “sticker” for the “Two Minute Club”. then they will earn their One minute Club and Thirty Second Club stickers, too. When they have earned all their stickers they are a “Mad Dog Top Dog”.

A free trial is available for download on the site. It will entitle the user to use the first fact family for three levels. A user’s key is required to unlock the rest.

You have several options when ordering. For $19.95 you will receive a one year license. For an second year, (2 years total) it is an extra $10.00. ($29.95) For $10.00 more, ($39.95) you can buy a perpetual license that never expires.

There doesn’t appear to be a limit to how many students may use the program, but it is for single family or classroom use. There is no master or parent account though, so the parent would have to log in as the child to see the progress made.

Practicing math facts is rather like pulling teeth around here. So, I really enjoy having a variety of methods. Mad Dog Math is easy to use, in a simple format that can help you be ready with another approach.

Student Writing Intensive - IEW

Student Writing Intensive - Level A by Institute in Excellence for Writing
Why didn't someone teach me to write this way? Really?!

Institute for Excellence in Writing has a huge repuation, and it's earned it.

As part of the TOS Review Crew, I was sent a complimentary copy of the Student Writing Intesive - Level A combo in exchange for my honest opinion.

Here's the "official description" -

The Student Writing Intensive is a DVD course for students that can last 15-30 weeks, depending on the student. This makes a family’s introduction to IEW even smoother as the main teaching is done by Andrew Pudewa himself on DVD. Teacher notes, student handouts, and more are included to make this the easiest writing class you’ll ever prepare. Student Writing Intensive comes in three different levels. Cost $99

Level A – Choose this level for students in 3rd-5th grade or younger.

The Portable Wall saves wall space by having writing models and information on a tri-fold pocket folder for the student to use. Cost $7.00

This package differs in that the Teaching Writing with Structure and Style (see more about that item here) course for the teacher is not included. Instead it contains the Structure and Style Overview DVD with handouts. What’s the difference? The Overview disc condenses the Teaching Writing: Structure and Style course into a 2 hour 20 minute journey through all nine units in the IEW syllabus. It is more of an overview and if the parent intends to use the Student Writing Intensive DVD lessons only it will give them a background in the method. Cost $10

We were able to open and dig into these awesome resources immediately!

The testers at Bentz laboratory were all ready aquainted with the IEW method of writing. (We've been doing it for a couple of years). But, this course is so wonderful mainly - because the talented Andrew Pudewa is the teacher!

It is incredibly well organized. I was impressed with the amount of information contained in this set. I like how we now had a common language to speak in our writing lessons. I can recognize that something isn't quite right, but telling the boys to "make it sound better" was never as effective as giving clear directions, for example, add a dress-up or some strong verbs, maybe an -ly opener would fit here. Hey - that's a banned word!

Thank you Mr. Pudewa for teaching us all to write better, and letting us giggle while doing so!

Once you take a deep look at this program (don't let the volume of information intimidate!) you'll be hooked too! Take a look at this page to get a more detailed history of IEW.

Go Trybe

Go Trybe.com-
What is it?

GoTrybe.com is an online fitness and nutrition community that delivers daily fitness, nutrition, wellness, and motivation content to students and teachers across the US. Go and Try something new, and Be your best!

We were sent an complimentary membership in exchange for our honest opinion as part of the TOS review Crew.

Okay - so who thinks they (and their kids) are in great physical shape? Which of your homeschools routinely incorporates Physical Education? Now that we have that out of the way, what are we going to do about it?!

I have to admit - I'm a physical education, fizzle-out! I have grand intentions, I have books to tell me how to do it, but - I still don't... And, I'm passing that lack of exercise routine to my kiddos.

GoTrybe.com is a solution that works! Once you get it started, both you and your students can benefit. You load your Avatar (which is where you spend your reward points), and then customize the workout you want to do. In addition, you will get daily nutrition, motivation and wellness lessons. Each activity you complete earns you points, which you can use with your Avatar. There are 3 levels- K-5th, 6th-8th, and 9th-12th to choose from.

We found it easy to do. Here's the perfect Homeschool family Physical Education program! You don't need any equipment, and you only need enough space to move around in.

Best of all, the price is outstanding!!! Just $19.95 per year! You can even try it for free here.

But, I'm telling you, it's less than the gym, less than my hubby's P90X, and less than the books on Physical Education gathering dust on our shelves!

My kiddos enjoyed being able to make up new workouts. The instructors are peppy and fun, with kiddos as their "backup" group. GoTrybe also offers ways to connect with other users, blogs and lots of friendly help.

Happy 10th Anniversary TOS!

The Old Schoolhouse Magazine is celebrating their 10th year anniversary!

I absolutely LOVE this magazine!! Each issue is packed with information, inspiration and infinite resources. (hey, I was using alliteration!)

I have been a subscriber since our homeschooling journey began, and I would highly recommend it as a "MUST HAVE" homeschooling tool.

But, it doesn't stop with the print magazine... The Old Schoolhouse also has numerous online resources to help you as well.

And, finally - I have enjoyed being a member of the TOS Review Crew. Here's your opportunity to hear what ordinary moms like you think about various homeschooling products - that they have actually used! (sometimes, the best advice you can get...comes from someone who has nothing to gain by telling you "been-there, tried-that", know what I mean?)

You can get a great Subscription deal - but hurry, they're selling fast! Included with the 2 year subscription are 19 great gifts!

So, take a stroll on the TOS Blog Tour to see what others have to say about The Old Schoolhouse!

Monki See Book and DVD

Monki See
We were sent a copy of Know Your Monkey ($9.95) and the
DVD - Babies First Words ($19.95) to review as part of the TOS Review Crew (we did not recieve any compensation).

Monki See creators believe babies and very young children are capable of learning to read. You can read about their philosphy here This program is created for children 3 months to 2 years of age.

Both the Book and the DVD were bright and colorful, easily catching the attention of my littlest tester at the Bentz test laboratory. She is only 2 (really, she just turned 2 yesterday, so she was still one during our review!). She is just starting to like to watch a video now and then - for all of her 5 minute long attention span - she enjoyed watching the video. (I don't believe she picked up reading any new words - but, we're going to have to increase that attention span!) A surprise - my 3 1/2 year old daughter - loved the movie. I do see it as a helpful tool for parents dealing with delayed speech issues (like we are). You can take a look a sample clip here.

She loved the book! It's focus is on body parts. (But, then again - she is my daughter - and a book beats a video everytime..) The format is See and Say - with pictures and text seperated. You can look inside the book here.

All in all, I am not a fan of teaching your babies (or very young children) to read -I believe they should be interacting with their families, being read to, and eating the playdoh and crayons. But, if you are a fan of this approach - you may enjoy the Monki See products!

Kregel Publications - Andi's Fair Surprise

Yippee!! We love stories about little girls and their ponies around here!!

We were sent a complimentary copy of "Andi's Fair Surprise" by Susan K. Marlow, in exchange for our honest opinion as part of the TOS Review Crew.

Selah could NOT put this book down!!! In fact, her main birthday wishlist included the other 3 books in this series - which she also devoured in no time!
Check out these other Circle C Beginnings titles:

Andi’s Pony Trouble
Andi’s Indian Summer
Andi’s Scary School Days

And coming in August, 2011 are:

Andi’s Lonely Little Foal
Andi’s Circle C Christmas

These easy-to-read stories also have FREE downloadable activity and coloring pages. Selah used them to create her book review for our co-op.

The book is what we call, historical fiction. Set in the 1800's at the California State Fair. It has a wonderful character lesson (which the activity pages help you capitalize on!)

You can purchase the books for $4.99 each - directly from the publisher, on Amazon.com or Christianbook.com.

If you are looking for some wholesome, fun reading for your 6-8 year old daughter... these books get a double thumbs up from the Bentz test laboratory!

Yesterday's Classics

Yesterday's Classics
I am so excited about this item!! In fact, I need to say a big Thank you, because of this review...my wonderful husband bought me a fabulous birthday present - a color Nook (a EPUB reader for those who don't know what I'm talking about.)

I was sent the Yesterday's Classics collection in exchange for my honest opinion as part of the TOS Review Crew.

So, what is Yesterday's Classics? Well, they are a publisher of quality books. Further, they have compiled a HUGE - 225 volume, set of classic books in a variety of genres. You get all this, in either Kindle or EPUB (which works with all other formats, including your very own computer - just add a free app to read) for just $99.95! (it's on sale through May 31st...that's less than 50 cents per book!)

Many of the titles are used in Living book curriculums such as Ambleside, Tapestry of Grace, Heart of Dakota, etc. We are plain excited to have at our fingertips, so many wonderful books.

My oldest immeadiately downloaded a E-reader app onto his Itouch, and hasn't stopped reading since. It's pretty cool, at least to this book loving mom, when her teenager is hooked into his "device" - but, isn't playing the lastest Angry Birds game, he's reading "Wonder Book" by Nathaniel Hawthorne! (side note, he was amazed to learn it's about Greek Myths...kinda like "an old-fashioned Percy Jackson, mom")

I also downloaded a free app to read the books on my computer. I am not the most techie mom around, so if I can do it - so can you! (Plus, their customer service is tops - they'll help you right away!) A couple of days later, I got my birthday present (thank you wonderful husband)... so, now I can read on the go as well. If you want to, you can even print them out!

If you are a book lover (and what homeschool mom isn't?) You HAVE to have this collection!!! It's well organized into level, genre and subject.

Latin's Not So Tough - by Greek & Stuff

Latin's Not So Tough - by Greek & Stuff

I was sent a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest opinion as part of the TOS Review Crew.

So, we reviewed a great Latin program for the oldest member of the Bentz Laboratory...but, what was I going to do with some of the much younger testers? No fear, Latin's Not So Tough arrived!

We were sent the Student Worktext, Pronunciation CD, and Answer Key, this set sells for $51.40. You can see sample pages here.

I set it out, and Selah grabbed it right away - "I'll test this one, Mom!". So, off she went.

I have to tell you, she has independently been learning Latin! Can you believe it, a 7 year old, picked it up - without "mom intervention" and has been JOYFULLY learning Latin.

The workbook is easily understood, with several pages per lesson (36 lessons in all). Flashcards you can assemble are in the back of the book. She loves making them...so off she goes! The Pronunciation CD helps her understand the correct sounds (no mom needed).

I am impressed by how easily we could implement Latin study into our routine. If you want something to give your students the Latin experience, but are a busy mom without the time (or desire) to study Latin alongside them, This is your program!

Growing Healthy Homes - Nutrition 101: Choose Life!

Growing Healthy Homes - Nutrition 101: Choose Life!

I am so very excited to tell you about this! (and for those of you who "really" know me, and my not-so-healthy eating habits...you'll be pleasantly surprised.)
For years, I have tried to avoid becoming "healthy"...you know - eating organic, whole foods, exercise, blah, blah. But, after taking a look at Nutrition 101: Choose Life! - I've become a believer!

I was sent a ebook version of Nutrition 101: Choose Life! in exchange for my honest opinion of it as part of the TOS Review Crew.

"Nutrition 101: Choose Life! is a three-in-one family nutrition and health program for all ages that presents the major body systems, how they function, their common health issues, the benefits of good food and the consequences of bad food. Its 448 pages include into six units:

1.The Brain and Nervous System
2.Digestion and Elimination
3.Respiration and Olfactory
4.Muscular and Skeletal Systems
5.Cardiovascular and Immune Systems
6.Endocrine System and Emotions.

Biblically based and packed with hands-on activities, science and art projects and nearly 80 family-friendly recipes, this program teaches and reinforces the why’s of what we should eat, not just “because I said so.” Containing a complete reference guide filled with nutrition facts, charts, practical tips and an exhaustive index, Nutrition 101: Choose Life! will serve as a constant resource for improved health and abundant living."

It's available either as a HUGE Hardcover printed volume for $99.95 or on CD-ROM for $79.95 (if you like to "have it all" - you can get the combo for $129.95).

Okay - I have to admit...I "know" we should be eating more healthy at the Bentz Laboratory. But, I've been avoiding this issue. Not anymore! This very well written (and not "preachy") unit study has changed my mind. The authors have put together a very good case for the how and why of nutrition and our bodies, and make a point - it is God we honor by taking care of our body.

Once I printed it out, (yes, the whole 448 page book - just because I love a book in my hands. You may want to just go ahead and get the book/CD-rom combo!) I couldn't put it down. Each unit is written in a very easy to understand format. I loved the receipes at the end of each unit, as well as the learning activities.

SALE:As a reader of the TOS Homeschool Crew, however, you have the chance to save 15% using the coupon code: TOScrew11 — and this is the same discount you would be able to get at a homeschool conference.

But, the information in the Apendices in the back - well, that's worth the price of the entire book, right there! Tons and tons of information you need to have to make healthy choices. Artificial sweetners, dairy, cleaning chemicals - just to name a few of them. This is actually a reference tool you can use over and over.

This Unit study combines a through study of the human body, and a through study of nutrition - all together in a Biblical, Christian manner. We have been studing Anatomy and Physiology this year, and this is the perfect complement to it.

If you are like me, "Health" has been a topic for your homeschool that you knew you "should" be teaching, but probably did not know where to start. Well, don't look any further - start with Nutrition 101: Choose Life!

I think this would be a perfect course for your local Co-op as well, and they offer co-op licenses for just $35.00!

Science Weekly

Science Weekly

(we were sent a complimentary copy as part of the TOS Review Crew in exchange for our honest opinion). Here's how they describe themselves:

"By 2025‚ 80% of the jobs in this country will require your child to have at least two years of mathematics and science beyond high school. In order to achieve this standard‚ a child must be exposed to science and mathematics in early elementary school.

Parents can no longer depend upon the schools to make this happen. Parents must intervene as early as possible in their child’s science and math education. Science Weekly is an excellent supplementary instructional tool for parents to help their child enhance his/her higher-ordered skills in science‚ math‚ reading and writing.*

Each issue of Science Weekly is written at six reading levels‚ covering grades K–6. This allows parents with two or more children to order the same topic for each child. It can’t get better. Now‚ there is no reason for a child to fall behind in science.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity. You can make it happen for as little as $19.95 per child‚ per year."

Well said -don't you think?!

Here are some of the topics for the year
Pulleys, Cats, The Flu, Glass, Fractions, Composting, The Science of Movies, The Science of Money, Scuba Diving, Poisonous Animals, Caves, Teeth, Deserts, Green Buildings, The Moon

You can see your own sample issue here

Be sure to check out the Interactive Online Formats here

We got Levels Pre-A through Level E on "The Flu". (Actually, great timing since we were just discussing this topic in our Human Anatomy and Physiology class for Co-op!)

Each level was a 4 page, colorful newsletter. Inside each were vocabulary, a weekly lab, Math, Storytelling or Writing activity and Challenges all customized to the appropriate grade level.

I liked how you could use this with different age children and all stay on the same topic. (Great for big families). They also send a page of Teacher Notes, so you have more in depth information as well.

The price of $19.95 per student for 15 issues is affordable (not so much for larger families...but, anything when you start "multiplying" "adds" up quickly! - get it, a math pun!)

All in all, I am a "science geek" and love anything that brings more science into our school. I didn't see anything supporting a Christian Worldview, but I didn't see anything in our issue that disagreed with it either...

Kinderbach

Kinderbach is about establishing a music foundation for young children. Students learn note reading, rhythm, singing, vocabulary and a variety of other skills which provides them the basis for further education. It’s about much more than just playing the piano!

We were given an online subscription in exchange for our honest review as part of the TOS Review Crew.

Kinderbach teaches Young children (ages 3-7) the basics of music with 7 levels currently available. The program uses short, engaging lessons to teach the concepts. This is particularly useful for this age category.

Our Bentz Test Laboratory has lots of musicians... so it was fun to see an innovative, new approach to the traditional private (and expensive) lessons.

My younger children enjoyed meeting the characters. (And I found them helpful memory tools as well!) The lessons were short, and easy for the "youngers" to do on their own. In addition, lesson books and coloring pages rounded out the experience.

Kinderbach offers 2 free weeks of online lessons (regulary $7.99 per month)- so you have nothing to loose! DVD versions of the program are available starting at $40.45. Check out the pricing options here.

Songbooks are also available in several choices - see here As well as other Extras

We had a very enjoyable time exploring this program! And, with the high cost of private instruction and programs like Kindermusic... this is a fabulous, affordable alternative. In fact, my "youngers" were begging for their time to "practice" (something that requires bribery in the older crowd...)

Go Go Kabongo

We were sent complimentary habitats in exchange for our honest opinion as part of the TOS Review Crew.

So what does GO GO KABONGO! teach?

"Kabongo games do not teach with “right” and “wrong” answers. Instead, they guide children toward better thinking by using an exciting, engaging game design. Children use a wide variety of critical-thinking and problem-solving strategies to play and progress, including these skills that are essential for reading::

Attention and focus:
Children must be able to focus on important clues and rule out other distracting factors in order to become efficient readers.

Working Memory: Children must be able to keep information in their short-term memories long enough to make sense of a word, sentence, or paragraph. For example, repeating ideas back to themselves can help kids remember and make sense of key messages.

Processing: Children use different “processing” techniques to derive meaning from what they see and hear.

Successive processing: In order to decode words effectively, children have to remember the letter sounds in order and assemble them into a whole. The same is true with words and sentences.

Simultaneous processing: As readers advance, they move more quickly through words and passages, “reducing” and organizing the information to make sense of it faster. For example, they begin to recognize certain words, taking each one in as a whole instead of letter by letter. Or, they repeat back the essence of a paragraph, culling out the less important ideas and focusing on the most important concepts.

Visualization: When children are presented with more information than they can easily remember, creating a mental picture often helps them process what is being described.

•Planning: Fluent readers take many factors into account each time they read. They use what they know about individual letters and words, their context in the passage, and their relationship to outside experiences. As children learn to read, they evaluate and apply various strategies, developing planning skills for future learning.

•Comprehension: All of the skills and strategies above support a child’s ability to derive meaning from what he or she reads. Good comprehension is essential to all kinds of learning, from language arts to science, social studies and more.

You can expand the learning with two additional habitats – Galaxy Gardens and Twister Top which are $4.95 each. SPECIAL OFFER: SIGN UP NOW AND YOU GET THE GALAXY GARDENS HABITAT FREE! Hurry - this offer is only available for a limited time."

Now that you know what it is, and what it teaches, here's what the Bentz Test Laboratory thought. IT'S ALOT OF FUN!!!

My chosen tester is quoted "I don't think it's one of those boring "teaching" games, Mom. This is just for fun!". I think that quote speaks for itself... Too many times our kiddos can sniff out the "educational" games, and they will attempt resistance. But, Kabongo was so fun - he never caught onto my secret "educational" plot.

The programs allows you to explore several habitats (three different games in each habitat, each with six levels). But, they also got to customize their own character (they loved this!), decorate their treehouse, make a comic book, go on mini-quests, and even design their own skate park. All the while, learning important reading skills. The program will even send progress updates to Mom, so you will know what they are learning. Coloring and activity pages are also available to add to the experience. In fact, the Parent center had an entire page of useful Reading related articles that you can check out here.

I do recommend having computer time be fun and educational. GoGo Kabongo does not disappoint in either category. And for the price, you can't beat it!

Zeezok Movie Guide - Ben Hur

Zeezok Publishing has a great way for you to incorporate Movies into your curriculum - The "Z-Guide"! (I was sent a complimentary copy of the Z-guide to "Ben Hur" in exchange for my honest opinion). I just "know" that when I get to heaven...Moses is going to look just like Charleton Heston, don't you! But, that's a different movie...

Here's what we got:

"The Ben Hur z-guide contains a topic overview, movie synopsis, and ten learning activities for an in-depth study of the film.

*Learn more about Roman chariot racing and Jewish attempts to overthrow Roman rule.
*Think through your stewardship responsibilities or identify elements of Roman government found in the film.
*Evaluate your own beliefs with the “Worldview Activity,” probe the director’s mind with “The Filmmaker’s Art” activity, and get the entire family involved with the “For Family Discussion” section at the end of the guide.
*Choose those activities which best fit your student’s course objectives, areas of interest, or time schedule.

Movie Summary: The Romans begin to assert more and more control over the Jews in the first century BCE. By AD 6, Rome has taken complete political control of Judea. Several unsuccessful attempts to expel the Romans, including the misguided belief that Jesus Christ had come to be their political Messiah, result in harsh Roman reprisals and the Diaspora (scattering) of the Jews. Topics: Roman Empire, History of Palestine, Friendships, Consequences of Hatred

This CD contains a printable pdf file of the complete study guide for $12.99 It does not include the movie.

Zeezok has 20 titles to pick from, so you're sure to find something for your family.

Here's our thoughts - we LOVE family movie night! We love the cuddling together, the popcorn, the discussion times, and sometimes - just the falling asleep on the couch together-ness. So, "Movie curriculum" sounds perfect right?!

Well, it is perfect as an addition to your current curriculum - when used in "school time" But, one word of caution, do NOT try to take "Family movie night" and turn it into "school" - you'll wreck both options! My kiddos do not like completeing "Movie Review Questions" right after watching a good flick, just to show that they were actively paying attention... (maybe other kids do?)

So, keeping the two activities seperate (for the sake of you and your children's enjoyment). We liked using movies as "school"! The Z-Guide gives a great foundation for understanding the movie's theme and message, as well as historical background.

The Z- Guide was 37 pages of Review questions and additional educational activities (like crossword puzzles and designing posters). My boys loved spending some extended computer research time on Roman Chariot Racing! Lot's of great discussion starters are included.

I caution you, use this resource wisely... it can help you pull out lots of information and discussion points for the movie. But, if you treat it like a "quiz" or essay...you may loose the enthusiasm that you hoped to build (that's just my personal educational philosophy coming out again...)

All in all, I'm a fan for including multi-media presentation of the history eras we are studying, and movies like "Ben Hur", make history come alive for your kiddos. I'd suggest adding Z-Guides to help you make the most of the movies you want to be "school time".

Remember, leave those "Family nights" alone! (they're working fine the way they are meant to be...for enjoyment only!)

Big IQ Kids

Big IQ KidsWhat is it:

It's an online academy of learning opportunities for your child K-8.
They feature lessons in Spelling, Math, Vocabulary and States (our favorite...hands down!)

Here's what they have to say about each area:

Spelling: With a over 40,000 word dictionary, SpellingTime comes pre-loaded with 40 lessons for K-8th grade appropriate word lists. Or, as a parent or teacher, you can easily enter your own word lists and SpellingTime will automatically create a week’s worth of lessons, quizzes and tests around your own list with the goal of achieving 100% on the Friday spelling test.

Math:
You can set up a child's lesson to mirror what they are doing in their current curriculum. For example, if the child is on double digit addition and single digit multiplication, the program can focus on just these two areas providing invaluable practice and reinforcement that is certain to provide them with the tools to ace their next test. Or, BigMathTime can automatically generate grade specific and subject specific lessons as per your requirements.

Vocabulary: With an extensive library of elementary through SAT prep words, BigVocabTime comes pre-loaded with word lists OR, as a parent or teacher, you can easily enter your own word lists and the program will automatically create a week’s worth of lessons, quizzes and tests around your own list with the goal of achieving 100% on the week’s vocabulary test.

U.S. States: Every elementary student will be confronted with the need to know their US State facts to mastery. BigStatesTime is the ultimate tool in learning the state's location, capital, spelling, abbreviations and general state facts. The program allows parents/teachers to add additional facts which will be included in the child's lessons and the program culminates in a “State Mastery Exam” that, if passed with 100% mastery, awards the child a State Master Certificate.

Best of all- this is a FREE Program! They do have a Premium Version (which is what we were sent in exchange for our honest opinion)So, you can try it out before you decide if it's for you. You can see a comparison Here. Premium pricing depends upon you personal choices - but, starts at $19.99 per month for all 4 categories. (You can also choose an individual category only - starting around $7.99 per month).

What we liked...
Well, the Bentz test laboratory students love anything to do with "computer time". I love that Big IG Kids was educational as well. It was very easy to navigate and start the program right away.

As they completed each learning activity, they are awarded "coins" to use in the arcade.

The program is intuitive, and kept them moving along at their own pace. They have designed it to be a daily activity. (We didn't do it daily, but the kiddos did ask for it daily...)

We did think that the Spelling was a little less challenging... For one, you can see the word on the screen when you are supposed to "spell" it, But, it's good visual reinforcement of the spelling words. And, we found the "computerized voices" a little un-nerving at times (but sometimes our computer sound goes in and out - so it didn't really effect us!)

We really like the States unit. We had fun challenging each other to identify Capitals and Abbreviations.

All in all, this is a VERY useful tool to add to your educational trunk-of-tricks (if you're like me and get curriculum ADD... you need to have lots of new and fresh ways to keep everyone learning!)

ARTistic Pursuits

ARTistic Pursuits Grades 4-6 Book One, The Elements of Art and Composition

(I was sent a complimentary copy as part of the TOS Review Crew in exchange for my honest opinion.)

Okay, first for the confession... I am not "artistic" by nature. I can't draw, paint or sculpt. How on earth, am I going to teach this to my children (when I am so inept?) Anyone with me out there?

Here's our solution - ARTistic Pursuits! They have a complete art instruction and art appreciation curriculum for ages Preschool to Grade 12. You can do it! (maybe not on your own..., but with their help.)
I love how easy this series is to use. I have previously used the Elementary series (I even "taught" an art class for some friend's kiddos and mine...) with these books.

I was sent the Grades 4-6 - Elements of Art and Composition, Book 1 for this review.
I was not disappointed! Each lesson is clearly laid out, I was able open the book and start sharing it with my students. The Lessons each covered an element of art (line, color, shading, etc.) with a clear explanation. But, you get way more that just that - art history and art appreciation are woven seamlessly into each lesson, giving your students the "complete" picture. Technique explanations with real-to-life projects are a part of each and every lesson - where your student gets to practice the concept.

This book covered:

Space
Line and Shape
Texture
Value
Form
Form using Value
Local Value
Contrast
The Shapes of Natural Forms
Edges
Balance
Rhythm
Overlap
Depth
Proportion, The Face
Movement

Media Introduced: Ebony pencil, white pencil, black markers with point and wide tip, scratch art paper and silhouette

When I researched their website - I was impressed. I love their philosophy for art instruction being like a bookcase.

"A complete study of art should include the subject matter shown on each shelf in this illustration. The K-3 program covers the elements of art and compositional ideas suited to the age within the context of art history. Techniques are shown as new materials are introduced. In this way even the youngest students experience a complete study of art. Grades 4-12 get a complete, in-depth study of the elements of art and composition based on a variety of applications. Each application offers a different way of thinking about the topic, helping to expand awareness of the visual world."

First and Second Shelf, The Elements of Art and Composition
LESSON ONE - part 1, CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION (Building a Visual Arts Vocabulary) The first page of each unit begins with an introduction to one of the elements of art or a compositional arrangement. These are concepts foundational to a successful work of art. They are the topics for the units in each book. Each element is what artists focus on as they draw. Children learn to visually sift the element out from other information that they see.

part 2, EXPRESSIVE APPLICATION (Observation and Creative Exploration) These assignments guide children to observe the topic of the unit within their own environments. Introduced to a variety of approaches to exploring their world, each child uses creative thought, arriving at personal visual solutions within their art.

Third Shelf, Art History

LESSON TWO - part 1, PRACTICAL APPLICATION (Looking at Art) This activity broadens understanding of how each element of art or compositional arrangement is used by observing it in a work of art by the masters.

part 2, ART HISTORY (Learning About Artists, Art, Cultures, or the Times) The art history addition helps students to gain a broader view when looking at art and to understand that the ideas of people affect how the art looks. It gives a child the language he needs to do well in art history and introduces him to many artists in biographies. The assignment deals with the topic shown in the artwork of the masters as discussed in Lesson Two part 1.

Fourth Shelf, Media and Techniques
LESSON THREE - TECHNICAL APPLICATION (Art Materials and How to Use Them) Developing varied and essential skills for seeing and for applying materials, a child considers both traditional methods and experimentation. She gains a broad experience with materials most commonly used by artists.

LESSON FOUR - PRACTICED APPLICATION (Original Work) A final project allows children to bring together the main idea of each unit (explained in lesson one of each unit), its expanded use as seen in the master work of art (explained in lesson two of each unit), as well as new techniques for using materials to create an original work of art (explained in lesson three of each unit.)

And, it's worth mentioning that ARTistic Pursuits has won numerous awards to back up this philosophy. It really works! (even if you aren't artistic yourself...your kiddos can be.)

You can get it online at your favorite curriculum distributor or Here for just $42.95 - a great value that can be used over and over!

I'm not afraid to jump into Art now, and if it can work for me, it will work for you too!

Aesop's Fables Readers by Brill Kids

Here is another product from Brill Kids (if you're interested at teaching babies to read, you can read my previous review here)

Here's a description of the readers from their website:

"These books have been specially designed to give your child all the fun of storybook time, while also teaching your child to read."

Features include:

Text and illustration presented on separate pages.

More spacing between words to make it easier to see words individually.

A blank flap extension to cover the illustrations as you direct your child's attention to the written text.

The titles in this set Aesop's Fables (Volume 1) included:

The Lion and the Mouse
The Fox and the Grapes
The Fox and the Crow
The Boy Who Cried Wolf
The Turtle and The Rabbit

The set is available for $37.50 (reg. $50). You also get the digital format to use in your Little Reader (if you have it) for free with the purchase. It adds animated pictures as well as voices.

So, if you read my earlier review, you know I have some reservations about babies reading (maybe it'll work for you?) While the readers were brightly done, the "reading" skills were a bit advanced for any 3 mon. old's around the Bentz test laboratory...actually, the 1 year old didn't have much interest either.
The 6 and 8 year olds enjoyed them though!

One thing we did not like, the illustrations seemed a bit cheesy, and sometimes the rhymes were written in way that made you wonder if English might not be the primary language of the author...

The flaps were supposed to seperate the focus on the illustration and isolate it to the words themselves. Once again, I find that this kinda goes against personal philosophy of reading. I find the illustrations are the "hook" that draws my kiddos into the book, and then the words keep them there. But, everyone has a different approach, and this may fit yours better.

We did like the rhyming text (when it "worked"). And, I loved the idea of Aesop's Fables in a young kid friendly format.
