History on Horseback: The Early Years from Sonrise Stable Books: A TOS Crew Review

History on Horseback: The Early Years from Sonrise Stable Books

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way

History on Horseback: The Early Years from Sonrise Stable Books takes a unique approach to studying history.  In this first volume - readers follow history from 1493 to 1866 as told from horseback.

Designed for readers 12 and up, this book can be used as a delightful supplement to your history reading.  I love books that help history come alive for my students, and this is one of those.  No boring repetition of dates, this book gives us a glimpse into history on the back of one of our favorite animals (and history makers) the horses.

I have several "horsey girls" here, and they loved this perspective.  The softcover book has 53 short chapters, very easy to add this to what you are already reading.  The author, Vicki Watson, is working on a supplemental activity book that will include maps, timelines, questions, research and writing activities you can use to make this into a full history study - watch for it, it's coming in 2020.  Volumes 2 & 3 are also in the works.

Each chapter focuses on specific event or people in history - starting with Cortez, the Spanish conquistador  going all the way to the all black cavalry of the the Civil War.

The stories are not about horses, per say- but, you will learn quite a bit about horses along the way.   The chapters are short -usually just 2-3 pages with black and white illustrations.

The illustrations are often photographs or images of famous artwork (a side study in itself - be sure to check out the photo credits in the back). Many of the chapters include interesting side-bars with additional information to interest your students in learning more.

We have enjoyed all the new tidbits of history we have been learning:

  • How Thomas Jefferson kept a detailed record of all his horses, and their names, and Napoleon did that as well.
  • We learned what livery stables were - and why they were important, like historical "parking ramps" for horses in New York City in the 1800's.
  • The missionaries on the Oregon Trail with a peek into their letters and lives.
  • The way horse power transformed our transportation from horses towing the canal boats to racing the locomotives.
  • The role the horse played in industry with the pit ponies that kept mining going.

We found the stories very interesting, and the author has done her research well. The Bibliography is filled with links that will help you uncover more information too.  History study should help bring the past into our present, and these stories do that well.   What a delightful way to tie horses and history together!

Mattie Richardson's Horses in History Series by Author Mattie Richardson/Appaloosy Books: A TOS Crew Review

Mattie Richardson's Horses in History Series by Author Mattie Richardson/Appaloosy Books

Do you have a history or horse loving reader?  If you don't here is a wonderful way to turn your children into one!  We have been enjoying a new discovery Mattie Richardson's Horses in History Series by Author Mattie Richardson/Appaloosy Books.

These delightful books combine horses and history into a great story aimed at your 8-14 year olds.  We have received four books:

Appaloosy - written when the author was just 13 years old!  This book is set among the Nez Perce Indians (same tribe as a family favorite American Girl...it's a great companion book)

Dusty's Trail - this story takes you on an exciting adventure along the Pony Express.

Golden Sunrise  - a family favorite - takes the reader to the Alamo and the unforgettable fight for Texas freedom.

Day and Night - The story is set in the Civil War, and follows two brothers caught in the conflict that divided our country.

Each of the books was about 60-120 pages in length - perfect for your newly confident independent readers, or as a family read aloud.

The author, Mattie Richardson is an inspiring story in herself.  She began writing when she was just 13 years old, and has continued ever since.  This was a BIG encouragement to my daughters.

In each of the books, she combines her love of horses with history.  The stories are told through the eyes of the horse, giving a unique and endearing perspective that my girls simply loved.

I love historical fiction and how stories can teach.  The books are filled with great life lessons and family values.  A rare treat in today's tween/teen literature to be sure!

The books are illustrated by Clarissa Richardson (another young person!) with sweet black and white drawings.

Each book also contains "A Blast from the Past" section at the back that helps the readers learn more about the historical setting of the story.

We also had a chance to take a peek at the 100 page PDF of the brand new Day and Night Enrichment Guide to accompany the Day and Night book.  I love getting a chance to capture their interest, and get them learning too!

The PDF is filled with great ways to expand the learning - it could easily be a full unit study, or even used for a literature class. It's broken down into 8 parts.  Here's some of what you'll find:
  • Reading Comprehension - Make sure they understand what they are reading, they also make great discussion questions.
  • Vocabulary - matching and fill in the blank type exercises
  • History - more information about the historical period.
  • Geography - a great way to explore America .
  • Horses - my girls loved learning more!
  • Biography & Research - meet the famous figures of each era.
  • Creating Writing - Mattie encourages them to begin writing their own storiesand shows them how.
  • Living History - great ideas to help bring history to life!
  • Soldier's Life - An inside look, includes recipes too.
  • Further Reading Suggestions - recommendations for more.
My girls loved reading these!  They are well-written and capture the reader's interest right away.  What a great way to also sneak in some American History...

Check them out!

Circle C Stepping Stones from Kregel Publications and Susan K. Marlow: A TOS Crew Review

Kregel Publications

Andi Saddles UpAndi Under the Big Top

Kregel Publications and Susan K. Marlow have wowed us again with the NEW Circle C Stepping StonesSeries.

This series, designed for ages 7-10,  kicks off with two new adventures - Andi Saddles Up  and Andi Under the Big Top.  These are the first of six stories in this new series.

The stories follow  9 year old Andi and her horse named Taffy as they meet new friends, learn important lessons, and even join the circus!  These stories appeal to both boys and girls are are filled with wonderful character lessons along the way. They are perfect for your readers ready to move up from Circle C Beginnings and onto longer chapter books, but not quite ready for the Circle C Adventures.

My testers are 7 and 9.  They enjoyed the Circle C Beginnings series, and were excited to hear that there was a new way to hear more about Andi.  Thankfully, we got a chance to read both books - so they each could have one!  The olders sisters have been long time Circle C fans as well.

These stories follow the adventures of young Andi and her beloved horse, Taffy.  They are set in the old West, historic gold rush era.  The softcover, chapter books have 12 short chapters.  This is the perfect amount for your young readers to gain confidence in reading.

Andi Saddles Up - Andi makes a new friend and learns to trick ride.  Important life lessons abound in these stories.

Andi Under the Big Top has Andi and Taffy off on adventures with the travelling circus.  History comes alive with each story as well.

I love that these stories are FILLED with great character lessons, without being "preachy".  My girls have enjoyed reading them over and over, and the next release is always at the top of their book wish list.

In addition to great stories, which are filled with history, geography and character lessons, Susan K Marlow has created free Study Guides for both books.

These downloadable PDF books are around 26-27 pages of additional learning fun you can add to the reading to create a unit study.  She has packed these full for you.

Language arts, math, history, geography, hands on fun and even a handy printable reading schedule! Free coloring pages are also available online.

These are some of our all-time favorite books (and it takes alot to get put on that list at Bentz Test Laboratory).    Be sure to check them out!
