K-3 Vol. 6 Art of the Impressionists from ARTistic Pursuits

Making art is so much fun -  K-3 Vol. 6 Art of the Impressionists from ARTistic Pursuits   (part of the Art for Children - K-3 Series) makes it easy too! This series is one of our family favorites.

Art for Children - K-3 Series a 4 year, sequential course explores the history of art for your Kindergarten through Third grade students as it teaches the BIG ideas in art history. It includes 8 volumes which you can move through in chronological order, or jump to any specific time period you want to study. (
Be sure to check out our reviews by clicking on the link!)
Each volume includes video instruction that will help your child learn how to use the art supplies, and a written text lesson to gain an understanding of art history and art appreciation.

Each volume features an emphasis on using different art materials.  Watercolor painting, chalk pastels, paper cutting and folding, clay sculpture, print making, and much more are all introduced.  Additionally, each time period contains historical lessons and examples.

Different artists and cultures are introduced in this chronological series, along with visual images of the time period's master's artwork to enjoy and discuss together.

In K-3 Vol. 6 Art of the Impressionists focuses on the Impressionist artists of the Industrial Age: Manet, Morisot, Caillebotte, Monet, Pompon, Rodin, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro, Cassat, and Bartholdi in easy-to-use lessons that combine art and history as they create their own projects.

It is available in a hardcover book with a DVD and BluRay disk.  Or, we were able to access the Online Streaming for this 18 lesson course, a great option for taking it on the go.

The Online Streaming Course gives 2 year, unlimited access - and is available immediately with a streamed flip book (identical to the hardcover copy), tumbnails & note-taking capabilities, and additional tips and videos to help navigate the course.

My family has loved these books, and not just my K-3 students - EVERYONE got involved with the projects! (yes, even my high schoolers)

The book gives you a materials list so you can be prepared.  After that, my testers are able to work and create independently, which I love.

The lessons are short, only about 10 minutes each.  You can easily complete 2 volumes over a year.

My testers love to pick and choose from the excellent projects.  This volume includes a variety gouache painting techniques, as well as, carving, modeling, and constructing sculpture, and oil pastels.

Each lesson includes prep notes for the project, an introduction to the famous artist & a sample of their work to discuss, and the art project.  The video lessons teach techniques and how to use the supplies.

Here's a peek at what they were creating -

They loved creating clay sculpture and learning about Degas, especially my almost 14 year old dancer!

They really had a fun time gathering some fruit, and pinecones to work on gouache techniques while learning about Renoir.

The lesson using oil pastels was also a huge hit!  I love how the lessons give them confidence to create, and they are very proud of their finished products. It was during this lesson, that the high schoolers couldn't stand not getting to be part of the fun and started to create too (even Monty our dog didn't want to be left out!)

Our favorite project in this volume was the lesson on Pompon and our soap sculptures! We have learned so many new art techniques in this series and it has really built their confidence in creating.

These are HIGH SCHOOL students - they loved getting involved and creating too!

Of course, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to show them a science trick with our soap shavings and the microwave...

We really love this series!  It's made art instruction easy for me, and exciting for them.  I highly recommend checking them out for yourself.

Art in America from Artistic Pursuits Inc.: A TOS Crew Review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way

Art in America from Artistic Pursuits Inc.

We love creating, and Art in America from Artistic Pursuits Inc. has been a great addition!  This hardcover book is designed for your 8-10 year olds and is part of a series we have been enjoying from one of our family favorites for art instruction - Artistic Pursuits Inc.

These books combine a time period and art instruction.  Each book offers detailed, guided instruction for 18 projects as well as the background information to go along with learning about the artists.  Since we have been studying American history this year - this was the perfect complement!

The book contains 2 DVD's with all of the instruction or is available as an online course if you prefer.   The materials required are all detailed at the beginning.  One thing I appreciate about Artistic Pursuits  Inc. is that they keep supplies required simple - all we needed was some quality colored pencils and basic drawing supplies.

Art in America  focuses on teaching them how to observe and draw better.  Detailed objectives for each lesson are included.  The 6 videos teach basic art techniques like "Drawing a good line" and "Identifying Light and Dark" along with background on 12 famous American artists.

Prep Notes for each lesson help you set the stage - from taking a walk to observe shadows to arranging the room to demonstrate the effects of light source on objects, they are easy to set up and effective tips.

The series is designed for the K-3rd student, but my testers have been enjoying this series in 5th and 6th grade. We love the combination of video and text instructions.  The book is filled with full color examples of the master artist's work making it a way to teach them to appreciate great art as well.

I love that they can work independently.  The videos are short and easy for them to follow along with.

This is a great way to combine subjects as well.  Working with the ruler and compass was a great reinforcement to some geometry lessons.

I love how Artistic Pursuits Inc. makes creating art so engaging and easy to do. We are always proud of our creations!

Beyond the Stick Figure Art School: A TOS Crew Review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way

Beyond the Stick Figure Complete Drawing Course PLUS 3 Bonus Courses  from Beyond the Stick Figure Art School

With all our extra time, we've been creating with the Beyond the Stick Figure Complete Drawing Course PLUS 3 Bonus Courses  from Beyond the Stick Figure Art School.

This online program gives your entire family life-time access to 180 step-by-step lessons in:
  • Drawing
  • Pen and ink drawing
  • Watercolours
  • Acrylic paints
  • And Bonus lessons in 3D Design with clay
Each lesson is a short video, designed to be used by anyone - ages 5 to 95.  Sally Stansfield, the homeschool mom and artist that created the program, will walk you through the lessons and show you exactly what to do.  I love that a well-trained artist is the one teaching these skills to my children. Her English accent is absolutely delightful!

All you need to get started is access to the internet and a few basic (but quality) art supplies.  Sally details exactly what you need.  We started with the best color markers we have ever owned! We learned quickly that quality supplies make a HUGE difference in our art, and these Prismacolor markers were worth the investment.

The program really does walk you through step-by-step.  The program is designed for students to use independently, no planning on mom's part!

The students must move sequentially through each lesson and complete it before moving to the next lesson.  The website is easy to navigate, and the program picks up exactly where you leave off. We did have some technical issues, but I was completely impressed by Sally's quick response to get us going again.  I wish we could have explored other sections of the program without completing the entire drawing section first.  I think it would be a helpful modification to allow students to pick what section they want to start with.  My testers loved learning to draw, I can't wait to join them in the watercolor lessons.

The early drawing lessons focused on helping my artists see and draw the basic shapes.  Lessons frequently include worksheets to download.  Typically, my testers were using basic watercolor or drawing paper divided into 4ths.  They loved getting the practice drawing, and I saw right away the benefits to this type of incremental approach...it's like learning basic phonics in the process of  learning to read.  They were creating basic shapes in the process to learn to draw. An "aha" moment.

My girls love getting to do anything on the computer and it's even better when they can do it together.  We spent our review time in the drawing lessons, but can't wait to move into the pen and pencil, acrylic, watercolor and 3D lessons!  Sally is a very encouraging teacher and she breaks down the intimidating aspect of making art into easily mastered steps.

With the short lessons, this is an easy way to incorporate some art instruction into your day.  My testers liked to do several lessons at a time. Here's a few creations they have been working on.

Overall, we really enjoyed this program.  It's an easy way to get everyone creating art!

Online Drawing Program from Creating a Masterpiece: A TOS Crew Review

Online Drawing Program from Creating a Masterpiece

My students love the online Drawing Program from Creating a Masterpiece!  This easy-to-use online program is so easy to use - they were off and creating, without any help from me.

The Drawing Program consists of 4 different levels of video-guided drawing lessons.

  • Beginning - 8 lessons
  • Level 1 - 7 lessons
  • Level 2 - 6 lessons
  • Level 3 - 8 lessons

Each project is designed to teach different drawing techniques with skills, increasing in difficulty as they move through the levels.

Students are guided step-by-step by video instruction done by Sharon Hofer, a master artist, as their guide.

The videos are designed so that you feel you are with her, in the studio.

My testers really enjoyed the lessons.  One thing we really like, is the ability to work at our own pace.  They could pause, stop or rewind whenever they want - an advantage over a class room.

The supplies needed are limited to just paper, pencil, colored pencil, and charcoal, each lesson gives a detailed list.  This makes it a great place to start learning to draw and developing skills.

From their first project, my testers were hooked.  The guided lesson made it easy for them to break it down to manageable steps, and they loved what they created!

The lessons teach them how to plan, develop and enhance their drawings.  As they worked through the levels, they were learning plenty of art theory like incorporating value, shading, two point perspective and more.  They were also developing concentration and confidence.

The program is specifically designed so that students can work independently.  All I had to do was put out the supplies, and get out of their way.

Here's a few of their masterpieces.... I really like how they are similar, but distinctly their own at the same time.

They keep begging for more drawing time.  You'll want to check this one out - it's a great program!
