Easy Grammar Ultimate Series: Grade 9 from Easy Grammar Systems: A TOS Crew Review

Easy Grammar Ultimate Series: Grade 9 from Easy Grammar Systems

High school students should have mastery of basic grammar concepts, but - in reality, they still need practice.  That's where Easy Grammar Ultimate Series: Grade 9 with Easy Grammar Ultimate Series: Grade 9 Test Booklet from Easy Grammar Systems can help!

The Easy Grammar Ultimate Series (Grades 8-12+) is a teaching tool with 180 lessons . It provides highs chool students with continued grammar instruction and practice in short, daily lessons.  Each lesson takes roughly 5-10 minutes.

The book is both a teacher guide, and student workbook as the lessons are intended to be done independently by the student.  Easy Grammar Systems allows you to reproduce them within your family (a nice perk), but I always find it easier to just let every student have their own workbook.

Let me show you an example of a daily lesson, they all follow the same structure.

Each lesson begins with Capitalization and Punctuation.  Concepts are briefly introduced, and the student practices with a sentence.  Short and simple...exactly the type of reinforcement and practice our busy high school students have time for.  Many of the sentences provide information about history, cultures, nutrition, geography, health, government, music, art and more.

Parts of Speech are covered next.  The text is specifically designed to begin with basic concepts and build on them to more complex grammar concepts.

The last section covers Sentence Combining. This is where students can use the information they have learned to practice writing an excellent sentence.

A separate book of Tests is also included.  These assessments provide your student a chance to see what they remember with a test every 10 lessons.  The tests follow the same format as the lessons.

A full answer key is included in both the student workbook and the test book.  No need for any additional guides. A handy Scope and Sequence in the book can help you pinpoint lessons with particular topics as well.

We have been long time fans of Easy Grammar Systems.  I like that lessons are short and independent.  We have found this to be a very effective way to keep grammar skills sharp, even through high school, while leaving enough time in the busy schedule to focus on literature and writing skills.

Be sure to check out some of the other levels the Crew is reviewing:

  • Easy Grammar Plus (This text is frequently used for 7th grade, but would be good for any middle school grade.

Fix It! Grammar from Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW): A TOS Crew Review

Grammar that makes your student smile?  Really!  We have been loving Fix It! Grammar from Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW).  This easy-to-use program will have your student understanding and mastering the art of grammar in just 15 minutes a day. Check out what Mr. Pudewa has to say about this program:

My tester started with the first of 6 books in this series.  Fix It! Grammar: The Nose Tree [Book 1],  they offer a handy placement test to help you find the correct level for your student.  My tester is in 4th grade, so we started at the beginning.  Book 1 is designed to help students learn to recognize and identify grammar in context.

The program contains a 45 page, spiral bound Teacher's Manual, with several options for the required Student Book.  I love the options!  We were blessed with a pre-printed, spiral bound Student Book, but the Teacher's Manual offers you access to the 132 page Student Book in a downloadable PDF version that you can print at home (a great options for big families!)  In addition, the Teacher's Manual offers 2 e-audios as well - Mastery Learning and But, but, but....What about Grammar.  I HIGHLY recommend these audios!

This program is designed to be completed by your student, in just 15 minutes a day, 4 days per week.  My tester really loved this feature.  It was "almost too easy" to quote her :-)  With a total of 33 weeks, it makes a full year grammar program per book.  The 6 volumes will give you 6 years of grammar instruction!

Let me explain what a week's lesson looks like.  On the first day, the student has a page of information  - the "Learn It" portion. Terms and grammar are explained in clear, easy to understand language. Each week introduces new concepts and reviews those already learned. The back of the Student book contains pre-printed grammar cards that your student can cut out and use to review grammar concepts throughout the year.

The "Fix It!" portion happens on days 2-4 with sentences containing errors in the grammar and mechanics.  The student's task is to locate them, mark them, and fix them.  For my tester's level, this was one sentence a day. Each sentence also contains a vocabulary word that the student writes out the meaning for. This is where my tester breathed a sigh of relief...just one sentence, not an entire intimidating page of grammar practice!

On the final day of the lesson, after discussing the corrections with you, your student then copies out the 4 sentences into a complete and corrected paragraph.

The Teacher Manual contains everything you need.  A Student Book view is included, with all the corrections identified.  Sidebars offer extra explanations for you and notes with helpful tips. An extremely helpful Grammar Glossary is included as well.  In this section, you find explanations for editing marks, grammar rules, as well as, stylistic techniques.  If you are an IEW fan, you will love that Fix it! Grammar speaks the same language!  One of my favorite parts, it integrates and reinforces our favorite writing program.

I admire that this program is both easy to use and effective!  Our goal in teaching good grammar skills is that they will use them.  After having tried numerous grammar programs, I can tell you that Fix It! Grammar actually works.  By approaching the skills in an integrated fashion, my students remember what they are learning.  It not only hones those important grammar skills but also give them valuable practice with another essential skill, proofreading.

Her expression says it all... Grammar that makes her smile!

Deluxe Combo Teacher/Student Writing Package Level B , with Fix It Grammar 1 & 2 from Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW): A TOS Crew Review

IEW Review

IEW Review

Deluxe Combo Teacher/Student Writing Package Level B with Fix It Grammar 1 & 2  PLUS A Word Write Now and Portable Walls from Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW)

I'm a HUGE fan of Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) - we've been using it for many years.  We were first introduced to it in our co-op, and I am hooked!  THIS is the way to teach your children to write and communicate effectively.

The Bentz Test Laboratory was blessed to get IEW's - Deluxe Combo Teacher/Student Writing Package Level B with Fix It Grammar 1 & 2  PLUS A Word Write Now and Portable Walls.  It was better than birthday presents...opening that package!

Here's what it contains:

Teaching Writing: Structure and Style, Second Edition (TWSS)   - This is the backbone of IEW's system.  A 12 DVD  set, with over 14 hours of viewing time, that systematically teaches the nine elements of structure and style of the IEW programs. This has recently been updated, it first debuted 20 years ago!  Andrew Pudewa is a masterful teacher, and systematically equips YOU to teach writing to your children.

I wish that I had learned to write this way, it would have saved me during my college years.

The TWSS Seminar and Practicum Workbook is a printed outline of the course with charts, word lists, sample lessons and more for each of the 9 basic Units of the IEW model.  From Key Word Outlines to Formal Essays and Critiques, it will give you what you need to be able to teach all your children, at the same time - even at different levels!

Another new bonus is the Premium Content subscription - A 12 month online subscription that allows you to stream all the content of TWSS, access to monthly training seminars, audio MP3's of popular talks by Andrew Pudewa, and many useful PDF downloads.

This is an investment you will want to make.  You will need to devote time to learning how the method works, but not all at once.  You can learn one unit at a time,  when your children are ready to move forward, you just stay one step ahead of them. Or, use summer break to do some "teacher training."  Mr. Pudewa is an enjoyable teacher and he's funny too.  Best of all, one you have learned the IEW method, you can teach TWSS over and over, with all different learning styles and multiple ages as well.

This DELUXE PACKAGE included Student Writing Intensive Level (SWI) B (6th - 8th grades).  The SWI includes over 5 hours of direct video instruction from Andrew Pudewa to your child, as well as the Student binder with instructions and handouts.

Since my testers are familiar with the IEW method - my testers for this review were a 5th and 7th grader.  One of them I would categorize as "eager to write" and one as "a reluctant writer".   Mr. Pudewa captured both of them in the FIRST VIDEO!  He's funny, he's clear (sometimes I need to work on that) and they were engaged.  In fact,  several children not chosen to be my testers for this specific review CHOSE to participate too - even though it's summer break!  That alone should speak volumes of Mr. Pudewa's teaching style :-)

Since deciding "what" to write about is often the hardest part of writing,  IEW makes it easy by providing the subject to write about, and teaching your student how to key word outline a passage, then using their own writing - rewrite with their own words and  "dress up" and "decorate" their writing to make it even better. Both of my testers created unique essays on the Sea Wasp (a poisonous sea creature) after just one session.  It gives all of us a common language to speak when teaching writing and communication skills.

I like the SWI - it's a great way for mom to get a mini-break teaching, and I learn more from Andrew Pudewa every time I watch it with them.  This is a great option for introducing you and your students to the IEW method.

This comprehensive DELUXE PACKAGE also includes:

A Word Write Now -   This book is a MUST HAVE writing tool.  It's way more user friendly than a thesaurus.  It's organized around character traits, descriptive words, and words for movement & senses. The appendix offers ways to "Make it fun"  playing with words, transitions, prepositions,  and literary genres and devices.  We keep this handy because ALL of my students use this resource regularly!

Portable Walls  are a single-pocket folder with an extra page that create a tri-fold wall packed with IEW reminders.  Inside are sections with the familiar "dress ups", "sentence openers", "decorations" and "triple extensions".  Each of the 9 units has a short summary to refresh the main points.  In addition,  you will find a great list of "-ly" words, imposters, prepositions.  Since "said" is dead... there is a long list of synonyms for it and "strong verbs" to help get creativity flowing.  It's like having a mini IEW handbook for your desk!

Fix it!  Grammar - The DELUXE Package includes 2 levels (Fix It! Grammar has six).  We have been using this program for the past year.  IT WORKS!  My testers are very "grammar challenged"...  we've tried many approaches but have yet to find one that sticks, until now.   Fix It! has them hunting for and correcting errors in daily passages.  It's short and sweet - only 15 minutes a day.  They are learning grammar, vocabulary and reinforcing all the IEW methods from writing - all in one place!.  My tester raised her standardized test language scores impressively this year.  According to her,  "It was due to Fix It! Grammar, mom!"

I simply cannot say enough about how much we appreciate IEW!  This package is truly the one and only language arts program that you will ever need.  It's the best investment we've made in homeschooling, and my testers are still smiling.

Fix-It Grammar from Institute for Excellence in Writing: A TOS Crew Review

Fix It! Grammar Review

Fix It! Grammar Review
Fix It! Grammar Review
For grades 3-12 - use this handy placement test  to see where to start.  Watch the Webinar to see how this is a fresh new approach to grammar instruction.

The Fix It! Grammar series is a 6 books series:
  • The Nose Tree
  • Robin Hood
  • Frog Prince (or Just Deserts)
  • Little Mermaid
  • Chanticleer
  • Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
Each  book provides a full year of grammar instruction and practice with editing skills. Each book has 33 weeks of daily passages broken into bite sized pieces. By spending only 15 minutes a day searching for the errors, and correcting them, your student will be practicing their grammar skills in a very painless way...just one sentence a day.  One book can be completed in a year, or double up the pace to finish in a semester.

This is not your average grammar program that teaches a rule and then "drills and kills" that one rule over and over on a page.  This is a more real-life learning approach that will help your child take the grammar they have been taught and integrate it into their writing, the ultimate goal, right?  The Fix-It  series makes your student slow down and really think about what they are reading, and then writing.  Editing skills are very valuable, and this program will help them fine tune those skills,  you will get better at it as well as you help them correct their work :-)

The Bentz Test Laboratory tester was my 6th grade daughter.  Let me tell you, grammar is not her strong suit.  Maybe since she's #4 in the lineup, she hasn't gotten enough focused grammar teaching (my fault).  Whatever the reason, grammar is not a subject that she looks forward to...usually it produces tears and gnashing of teeth (mine again).

When I saw that Fix It! Grammar: The Nose Tree [Book 1] from Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW)  was coming as a review,  I hesitated.    We had tried an older version of this program last year - but, this is a brand NEW, revised version.  But, I decided she should take another run at it.  I AM SO GLAD WE DID!

First off, if you have seen Fix-It! Grammar in the past, this revision makes it so much easier to use and understand. I love how IEW is committed to making our teaching job easier and more effective, I have never been disappointed with their products.

The Teacher's Guide is a must have component.  In fact, you get a download for the Student Guide with every Teacher's Guide (making it nice for multiple child families).  We were blessed to get both the Teacher's Guide and Student Guide in the spiral bound editions.  Save yourself the hassle and preparation time,  I strongly recommend starting off with it printed and ready to go.  Plus, the printed version offers the grammar cards printed on cardstock and ready to use. The grammar cards are a great way to reinforce and review the concepts being taught.

Each lesson starts with the "Learn It" section where the grammar concept it taught.  The Teacher Guide makes it easy to teach this and gives you a step-by-step instructions.

The "Fix-It" section explains the steps to the week's lessons.  Starting with vocabulary (over 100 new vocabulary words are introduced), and moving into 3 days of editing ONE SENTENCE per day, and ending with rewriting their corrected sentences, this is designed to be completed in just 15 min. per day, 4 days per week.

This is where I began to see a change for my tester...  grammar wasn't a dreaded subject anymore!  No more full pages of endless sentences to work through - she only had a single sentence to focus on. Just a few grammar points to learn.  No more tears (hers or mine!)

If you are using IEW Writing courses (and if you are not, you should be...), Fix-It! Grammar will reinforce the style techniques they are learning as well.  The Teacher's Guide & Student Guide also contain a handy Glossary of grammar and writing terms that you can refer to.

The final step of each lesson is to rewrite the corrected sentences.  Once finished, your child will have their own handwritten copy of the story.  This step can be used for copywork and handwriting practice, as well as reinforcing the proper grammar in their writing.  It's fully integrated with a finished product they can be proud of!

My tester is a believer -  this is her direct quote:  "Grammar's not that bad anymore Mom, I actually like doing Fix-It! Grammar..."

Never thought I'd hear that one...  Better check this one out and see for yourself!
