Activity-Pak: The Old Testament from Home School in the Woods

One of may favorite ways to study history is ANYTHING from  Home School in the Woods!  This time we got to take a peek at Activity-Pak: The Old Testament from Home School in the Woods.

This is an activity packed trip through the Old Testament with 15 different lap booking activities, recipes, creative writing, and a study of Proverbs for your students in grades 3 - 8.

Here's a quick peek at the Activity-Pak studies:

The Activity-Pak is available as a PDF download (or CD) that you print at home.  All you need is paper, ink, glue and a couple of file folders to get started!

The Lapbook activities are some of our favorite. 15 different mini-books are included covering the topics of :
  • Creation
  • Jubal & Tubal-Cain
  • From Adam to Joseph
  • Noah & the Flood
  • The Tower of Babel
  • Abraham, Sarah, & Isaac
  • Sodom & Gomorrah
  • Ten Plagues of Egypt
  • Ten Commandments
  • Hebrew History with Egypt
  • Israel's First Three Kings
  • Division of the Hebrew Kingdoms
  • The Fiery Furnace
  • Ruth, Naomi, and Esther
  • Major & Minor Prophets
Once you have it downloaded, you start at the Menu and print what you need.

The handy "start" screen makes it easy for you to find each component and instructions.  I love how easy these studies are to use!

Full color, detailed instructions with photographs are included to make it simple to complete, even if you are new to lap booking.

One thing we love about lap booking, is that you get a nice, finished keepsake of your study that you can come back to later.

The lap book activities are all varied, and even include some yummy Old Testament Recipes!

We have done many other history studies from  Home School in the Woods, one thing that makes this one different is that it doesn't contain the history lesson text and reading portions.  It makes this a great add-on to your studies, or even a fun summer Bible study project to complete together.

In addition to the lap book the Activity-Pak contains a fun creative writing Newspaper project.  It contains 19 different "article" titles for you to write about, illustrate and show off.  We can't wait to get started on this section!

And... there's more..  A section on Proverbs to illustrate - with a choice of lined copywork, or handwriting practice is included with 25 key Proverbs to study and memorize together.

If you are looking for a fun way to make history come alive, be sure to check this one out!  Other members of the Crew are reviewing these great products too:

Pursued to Eternity by John Riley: A TOS Crew Review

Pursued to Eternity by John Riley

Pursued to Eternity by John Riley

Stories are some my favorite way to escape, and to learn. Pursued to Eternity by John Riley is a great way to do both!

This short fiction book is a 17 chapter journey through time introducing the reader to the God of history and exploring the creation versus evolution debate.

The story follows the journey of two brothers - one a Christian, biology teacher and the other an Atheist geologist.

It's an easy to read book, once I started it was hard to put down.  The beginning chapters are set in a different time era, so it makes a fascinating trip through history as well.  The first chapter begins the story with a suspenseful dinosaur hunt.  Throughout the story, you'll travel to Egypt, visit modern American classrooms, and travel to archeological digs in Kenya.

All throughout this book, John Riley has woven Scripture, fascinating historical and archeological facts, scientific discoveries and plenty of great apologetics to help bring understanding to the creation versus evolution debate.

The author, John Riley, has a Master of Science degree and has worked thirty-five years as an engineer. During retirement, he and his wife, Nancy, have taught physics, robotics, SAT prep classes and an Apologetics: Creation vs. Evolution course on SchoolhouseTeachers.com. It's a 14 week, video-based course geared for 7-12th grade.

This story was an engaging quick read, but would also make a great introduction for students interested in apologetics and creation vs. evolution.  One chapter includes 68 key questions that can be researched to help students understand why they can believe in the Biblical creation account.  This would make an excellent, in-depth study for anyone!

The final chapters tie the early chapters together with the discoveries of archeological artifacts and show God's pursuit of man as the atheist brother comes to faith.

Famous Figures of the Early Modern Era from Figures In Motion: A TOS Crew Review

Famous Figures of the Early Modern Era from Figures In Motion

Figures In Motion has been a family favorite for years! In fact, we were delighted we could complete our collection with Famous Figures of the Early Modern Era (the only one we didn't have yet!)

These delightful articulated, historical paper figures are creations of Cathy Diez-Luckie, a homeschool mom.   "What is an articulated paper figure?"  They are sturdy card stock paper figures with several movable sections - connected together with brads.  They make a wonderful, hands-on addition to any of your history studies.

Each volume comes with full-color figures, and black-and-white figures for you to color yourself. The pages are perforated to make them easy to remove. The  Famous Figures of the Early Modern Era volume includes 21 history makers from the mid-1500s through the mid-1800s.

This is a great history project for ages 6-12 but, we have enjoyed them at any age! My testers have loved these and created the figures from every other volume of the series, so we were happy to have Famous Figures of the Early Modern Era  to go along with our modern history study this year.

Each book contains mini-biographies of each of the figures with dates, and some key facts to remember. Using the figures to create a moveable timeline is a great idea!

A Reading List is also included, which makes a great way to bring the figures to life.

The Directions are super clear and easy to follow.  No unusual supplies are required, all you need is a scissors and some brads. It's easy enough for most children to complete independently.  So much easier than some of our complicated history projects that are so intense... like paper mâché or salt dough, anyone with me?

Each assembled figure is about 12-13 inches tall with the name of the figure printed on the back (nice when you have a pile of them)

We have used these in so many ways.  My first book was Famous Figures of the Middle Ages & Renaissance and I used it to tell history stories in my co-op history class, the students loved seeing "who" was coming to class to tell them the story.  When I brought them home, I saw that my children kept on playing and telling stories with them... and I have been using them as an addition to our history study ever since.  They make a great review tool to see what they have remembered.

My son (now 15) has LOVED the figures - in fact, they were on his birthday list for several years.  Not only did they provide hours of interesting play, they also greatly helped him develop his fine motor skills as he carefully cut and assembled each of them. He's a "lefty",  so cutting skills took lots of practice and a left-handed scissors.  The figures gave him motivation to keep practicing!

When I asked him what he liked best about them, he said he loved that they could move and make poses.  He created elaborate battle scenes with these figures for hours on end. Even now, he offered to "make some more" just to help me 😊

My daughter (age 11) was not about to let him have all the fun!  She claimed this volume as "hers" and has been happily creating figures.  She really loves using the hole punch we were sent to make the openings for the brads - it helps the figures move more easily.

One of her favorite parts of these books is being able to color her own figures and create new historical figures.

I have been so impressed by how much these figures have gotten used over the years in our homeschool.  I would highly encourage you to add them to your history tool chest.

Make sure to visit their website and sign up to get a FREE Articulated King Tut puppet and visit the blog for tons of great ideas and freebies.

Time Travelers U.S. History Studies -The Industrial Revolution through the Great Depression from Home School in the Woods

We love learning history with Time Travelers U.S. History Studies! The Industrial Revolution through the Great Depression in our next stop in this series from a family favorite - Home School in the Woods!

Be sure to check out our stops with New World Explorers and The Civil War studies.

Each lesson contains Text Pages and Project Pages.  Text Pages are the "spine", they are well-researched information with tons of fascinating facts.  Project Pages are filled with options for you to choose from to make the lesson come alive.  A full Lapbook, penmanship, recipes, crafts and more are included.  Each lesson includes Master copies and detailed instructions.

Here are a few we liked -

My girls love anything crafty - getting to try decoupage for the first time was very fun (we only had spray mod podge - which we do not recommend).

This study has several fun, creative hands on projects.  We can't wait to try our hand at embroidered silk postcards and felt penny rugs!

The paper dolls gave them a peek into the fashions of this era.

I love the Timeline! It makes a great visual aid as we learn. You can choose a blank version and add figures as you work through the lessons, or I prefer the completed Teacher Key found in the handy Teacher Helps section.

We also enjoyed the file folder games.  These make a great way to review information, and I love to use them in my Coop history classes as well.  This game takes you on a fun trip on Route 66 as you learn about America.
