Apologia Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day Lapbook from A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks: A TOS Crew Review

A Journey Through Learning
Apologia Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day Lapbook
Apologia Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day Lapbook from A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks

We love lapbooks at Bentz Academy and we can't wait to introduce you to our newest adventure - Apologia Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day Lapbook from A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks.

This learning lapbook comes as a PDF download that you can print at home.  You may be wondering... What is a Lapbook?  Check out this introductory video.  Lapbooks are an interactive way to get your 2nd - 7th graders involved in learning.  Since we are currently using Apologia's Young Explorer Series at our Co-op science, this was a perfect addition.  You can find dozens of Lapbook titles to match what you are studying, or create your own unit study with a theme.

For this lapbook, you get PDF files in both black & white or color options.  We choose the color option, and are delighted with how it looks!  This is a GIANT resource - 177 pages.  It contains a lapbook for each lesson in the book - 14 in all.  You will need the textbook to accompany this lapbook.

The lapbook folder includes mini books for specific topics covered in each lesson.  By involving your student in the hands-on part of creating them, the learning really sticks.   We love the HUGE variety of mini books in A Journey Through Learning's lapbooks - you get copywork, diagrams, flaps, wheels, and more.  Best of all - it's all designed for you, ready to print and in color!

You simply print the pages, and give them a file folder, some glue, staple and brads.  They get to do the rest.

Each page shows which lesson it is for, and gives clear directions on how to assemble the minibook, where to place in in the lapbook, and where to find the information in the text.  It's really so easy!

My testers are in 3rd (daughter), 4th (daughter), and 6th (son).  I will admit that my daughters truly love lapbooking,  my son - a little less.  But, we have found a way that makes it less intimidating -  I do all the cutting ahead of time, and put each minibook into a zippered bag.  He still does all the finding of the information, and placing it in the lapbook.  He's actively involved, and super proud of his creation.  It's hard having crafty sisters...

In addition to the lapbooks for each lesson, this PDF gives you plenty help if you are new to lapbooking.  They have full color instructions for folding, assembling and even storing your lapbooks.

Digging Deeper page offers additional reading selections to go with each lesson.  Enrichment pages are blank pages you can use to create book logs, book reports, and even pages to record narration.

A full Answer key is included - a big help for moms that haven't read yet...

Here's a quick page of products that they offer - you will find something for everyone here, including popular programs like Classical Conversations. You can really easily add lapbooking to any subject, or even as a individual learning project.

We have been using their products for years.  I love looking back on how much they have grown, how their handwriting and changed, and what we explored together.  Lapbooks make a keepsake out of your learning.  I feel A Journey Through Learning makes some of the highest quality lapbooks you can buy.  They are easy to use, and super affordable.

One thing you'll never see with boring old workbooks... BIG smiles that want to show off what they learned!

Tales from the Circle C Ranch from Circle C Adventures : A TOS Crew Review

Tales of the Circle C Ranch Bookk ReviewTales of the Circle C Ranch Bookk Review

The Bentz Test Laboratory could not wait to get their hands on this one!  My 12 year old tester disappeared immediately with Tales from the Circle C Ranch by Susan K. Marlow.

This collection of 11 short stories is a perfect companion book to Andi’s  (the main character) adventures from the Circle C Beginnings (ages 6-9) and Circle C Adventures (ages 9-14)  to an older Andi in the Circle C Milestones (ages 12+).  The stories actually came from questions that readers had submitted to the author.  My tester has been a HUGE fan of Andi's since the beginning, so this was a great read for her.  But, you could read this as a stand alone book, even if you haven't read the others (but, you'll want to...trust me!)

This is great, wholesome, Christian fiction for your daughters.  My daughter is wild about horses - so, Andi's life is her dream.  I love that these books are teaching character values and history as well.  A California ranch in the 1800's is the setting, and there are quite a few things she has learned about this time period by reading these books. You can read a chapter for free here.

We also received the PDF download of Andrea Carter's Tales from the Circle C Ranch Learning Lapbook. We LOVE lapbooks, and this was the perfect companion to this book. Each short story featured a printable mini-book for the lapbook. My tester was excited to build her very own Andi Carter theme lapbook.  Some of the topics included in the lapbook are:

girls dress styles during the 1800's

the general store

history of photography

state fairs

history of fireworks

how to write a limerick

crabs

Lapbooks are easy to make, just a couple of file folders (yippee...finally, a use for my obsession with "pretty" folders), some glue and colored pencils. This is a really well done, color lapbook.  All the hard work is done for you, all you need to do is cut and assemble.  Information about each topic is included in the PDF, so they are learning too.

This is why I'm a huge fan of lapbooking, you get a hands-on, memorable way to reinforce the learning that they are proud to show off! (ever do that with a book report before?...nope.)

I think this is a great summer project, my tester really enjoyed the book - and loved the lapbook. Lots of learning, no grumbling!

You can purchase the lapbook here for $7.00 (It is also available in print for $12 plus shipping and handling or you can buy a combination of the book and lapbook for $19 plus shipping and handling) You can find all of them here. You can also have your book personalized!

There is also a series of books for boys ages 8-12 from Susan K. Marlow to check out - Goldtown Adventures

Bentz Test Laboratory has been long-time fans of In the Hands of a Child, in fact - since they got started back in 2002!

They offer hundreds of topics to choose from.  You can seriously ask your child "What would you like to learn about" and you will find it.  One of our first lapbook experiences was with the subject of Mosquitoes...really.   And you'd never believe all that we learned!

So, when the TOS Crew offered us a chance to take a peek at National Parks, we knew we would enjoy it. A Project Pack from In the Hands of a Child includes more than just the lapbook components (although - those are all included, ready to print - with instructions).  You get a full research guide, suggestions for outside activities, reading lists and more.

I am a HUGE fan of this type of learning.  Involving your child in the process, letting them exercise their creativity and imagination, and creating a great keepsake of what they have accomplished.  We have an entire drawer of completed lapbooks (even the mosquito ones!) that we just can't bear to part with.  You can't say that about those boring old workbooks, can you?!

Another benefit - being able to follow your child's interests.  It may be Submarines today, and Dolphins tomorrow.  No matter what direction they want to pursue, you will be able to find something to get them excited about.   Best of all, the research and prep work have been done for you!

We have done these studies many different ways.  Sometimes they are our main curriculum and we work through several sections daily and complete an entire project pack within a week or so.  More often, we add these to whatever subject we are studying in history or science to add some fun to our learning.

My testers favorite way to use these studies, is for each tester to pick their very OWN Project Pack to work on, then they work on one section a week over the course of a semester - with a completed lapbook at the end to celebrate.

My tester was so excited - she found a "National Parks 2013" calendar on clearance while school supply shopping with mom. That's the beauty of this type of learning, it really sticks with them when they get involved in the learning process.

Each study includes helpful suggestions of how to adapt this style of learning to the needs of your student.  A planning guide to help you schedule it.  Plus, to make it easy for you:  samples, pictures, answer key and detailed instructions are included.

National Parks took us on a trip to visit 15 National Parks, learn about the National Park system both it's history and issues they face.  Plenty of options to be creative are woven throughout - like designing your own Patch for the National Park Service,  making some Gorp, and your own Hiking trip supply list.

My tester loved working on her folder.  We like to cut out all the components at the beginning, and store them in a zipper bag until we finish.  As we work, we pull out what we need.  We assemble it all at once at the end - it's something we all get to look forward to... showing off the finished product.

Having done dozens of In the Hands of a Child studies over the years (with all ages), I can promise your children will enjoy them.  They are affordable, easy to use with multi-level students, teacher friendly, and perfectly customizable to your child and family. Give one a try, you'll see!

Letters, Numbers and Shapes photo Lettersnumbersandshapes_zps1d7d968f.jpeg

Let's start with a question... Do your children enjoy filling in the blanks on page after page of workbook after workbook to demonstrate their mastery of whatever subject they are studying?    If so, don't bother reading further - you have a method that is working for you...for now.

Next question - Do you have children that do NOT enjoy filling in the blanks, prefer to be using their hands, and just aren't content to sit still?  Well, this may be just the secret weapon you need!  It's called "Lapbooking" check out some handy How to videos here.  Basically, your child is engaged cutting & assembling mini-books to complement the topic you are studying.  While they are doing this, they are busy learning!

We have been long-time fans of lapbooking at Bentz Test Laboratory.  I can testify to this method's success. (we even made lapbooks about mosquitoes!!)  A Journey Through Learning has dozens of topics to pick from - from early learning all the way to high school level.

We were delighted to look at Knights and Castles.  Since we are currently studying the Middle Ages - this was a hit.  This lapbook includes a Study Guide written by Michelle Miller, author of TruthQuest History Curriculum.  The PDF download is so easy to work with, just download it and you're ready to get started!  Additional reading suggestions are included as well as a forms for book reports, taking notes, and narration for younger children .

The 10 topics included information on everything from "How to Become a Knight" to "Christianity During the Middle Ages".  Each component is full color, with directions of how to cut/fold and place into your lapbook folder. Doing one section a day - you work through the topic in about a month.  So easy!

I find it easier to print all the mini books and cut them out myself.  My children could use the extra cutting practice - but, having everything ready to pull out of the ziplock bag and complete as we are discussing the study guide has proven to work well for us.  After they complete a component - they are able to add it directly into the lapbook, building it as we move through the unit.  When we are done, we use our lapbooks as a review tool - looking back at what we've learned.  My children are proud to show off their finished creations every chance they get! (ever try that with your average fill-in-the-blank workbook?)

In addition - we previewed  Letters, Numbers and Shapes.  This is the perfect lapbook for your preschool age child.  It included letter writing practice, numbers and counting and shapes.  Additionally, they offer an alphabetical list of hands on activities to "do" with each letter - make an Ark with a shoebox to take a Zoo trip.  Learning about shapes was fun with their "Learning about Shapes with Food" section.   More activities, games, finger plays and suggested books to read round out the unit.

I went ahead and printed everything out, and created the folders.  I pulled the folder out during "schooltime" to use a way to keep my preschooler occupied while I worked with the older children.  She is so proud of her creation, and it didn't require a huge investment of mom's teaching time!

A Journey Through Learning has made it very easy for you to begin lapbooking.  They have lapbooks to coordinate with many popular curriculums and even with children's books and videos.  There's a topic for everyone!   Sign up for their mailing list - and they'll send you a free unit study lapbook.

Check out these others reviewed by the TOS Crew: The Earth (grades 1-4) & Astronomy and Space (grades 2-7)

Once you try lapbooking, you'll be hooked!
