State the Facts: a Guide to Studying Your State from Laurelwood Books

Whenever we move, one of my favorite things to do is to learn about our new state!  State the Facts: a Guide to Studying Your State by Mary Ellen Tedrow from Laurelwood Books is a wonderful resource to help your students age 8 and up learn about any state. It targets grades 4-8, but could really be used with any grade.  We worked through the guide together - all 8 of us - grades 1-12!

This 58 page workbook is designed as an independent study guide to help you complete a varied study of your state.  This can be used to study any one of the 50 states.  You could use this to study your state, a state you want to visit, or even the states your family live in.

By using resources like your local library and the phone book - students become experts in researching!

The Study Guide starts with Address & Phone Numbers for key contacts in your state.  My students find the internet an excellent resource to use for completing these informational pages.

They offer "conversation scripts" that are useful for making calls to get information, guiding the student through conversations with people like Librarians or Congressmen.

Research topics include:
  • Statehood
  • US Flag & State Flag
  • Men and Women of the State
  • Reading About the State
  • Contributions to the US
  • In Days Gone By
  • Then & Now
  • Just for Fun - Facts about the area you live in
  • Plan a Trip
  • Things to Look For
  • Nature Walk
  • State Fact Pages
  • Research
  • Weather & Weather Journal
  • Travel
  • Taxes
  • Natural Resources
  • Further Study
  • Field Trips
  • Presidents of the United State
  • Maps
  • Suggested Book Titles to Use with this book

We really like how comprehensive this Study Guide is!  It takes you into deeper study than just the basics, and encourages the student to find the information on their own.

I think this would be a great summer project as well. At less than $14 each, you could let each child personalize their own.  My daughters would love this, my sons would prefer just hunting down the information and surprising me with fun facts about Texas... Did you know - San Antonio has the world's only Toilet Seat Museum?   That's the kind of learning we do around here!
