The Green Book - eGuide from Progeny Press

We are long time fans of  Progeny Press literature guides!  We have just completed The Green Book - eGuide from Progeny Press.  This downloadable 57 page PDF written by Rebecca Gilleland is designed for students in grades 3-5.  The guide accompanies the book - The Green Book, by Jill Paton Walsh (sold seperately).

The Green Book is a short, 7 chapter science fiction story.  I love that Progeny Press offers such a wide variety of genres and titles.  I have rarely seen great science fiction for the early elementary ages and this book did not disappoint!   The story follows a young girl and her family as they leave earth and must create a new life on a new, and very different, planet.

There is so much to love in this story.  It is like reading early American history, but on an entirely new planet.  They must use all their creativity and skills to survive.  We loved the story.

The e-Guide is downloadable, and offers you the opportunity to immediately access after purchase.  It does contain fillable spaces, so your student can type answers directly into the form.  I have several students using this, and I prefer a hardcopy - so I print mine, and have it spiral bound.

The e-Guide contains everything you need for an in-depth literature study.  It gives information about the author, a brief synopsis of the story, and interesting background information.

Pre-Reading Activities offer suggestions that you can pick and choose from to "set the stage" before reading the book.  We are beginning our own commonplace books -and this was the perfect story to introduce them!

The e-Guide walks through the book, chapter by chapter.  In each section you will find vocabulary exercises - fill-in-the-blank, dictionary skills, matching, word search, synonyms, and more.  I love how they use various approaches so it never gets boring!

Additionally, each chapter covers comprehension style questions to make sure your students understand what they are reading.

Think About the Story are questions that encourage them to use their thinking skills to draw conclusions and introduces literary terms and beginning analysis. In this e-Guide terms like metaphor, mood, imagery, foreshadowing, alliteration, and juxtaposition are all explained.

And my favorite, the Dig Deeper questions that use Scripture to illustrate important points and themes in the story. This section will give you great discussion starters.

Optional Projects and Activities are included to help bring the learning off the page.  Discussion starters, hands on projects like cooking and science experiments along with writing exercises give you plenty of options for making the learning really stick.

The Overview helps pull everything together while discussing theme, conflict and message.  A Mystery Message, Venn Diagram and Crossword puzzle help your student see the big picture of the story.

A full Answer Key is included - so helpful for mom!

After you Read Projects are included for you to pick and choose from.  This is a great way to build on your child's curiosity.  From science explorations to recipes and poetry, they have included wonderful ideas you can use.  These guides are PERFECT for group literature study!

Additional Resources offer other books by this author, as well as other books your student may enjoy in this genre.  It is a very useful list.

Progeny Press guides are very comprehensive, and so easy to use. They have numerous titles in all grade ranges, elementary through high school.  You will definitely want to add them to your literature studies!
