By this time in our year...we are so over math! Getting a change of scenery was just what we needed to bring some life, and MathArt Online 4-Class Bundle from NatureGlo's eScience gave us a fresh, new look, Best of all, this online program combines history, science, art and MATH all in one!
Designed for students ages 10 and up, each of the four- 6 lesson classes is unique, and offers a new perspective. Your subscription give you access for a full year, with multiple students able to use the program at the same time. The four classes included are:
- Math Connections with the Real World
- MathArt in Ancient Cultures
- Mathematics in the Arts & Sciences
- MathArt - Patterns in Nature
We spent our time in MathArt in Ancient Cultures. My tester is 11, so she was a little on the young side. I do think some of the content may be more appealing to older students. The six lessons included:
- Ancient Babylonians & the Plimpton 322
- Ancient Greek Math & the Platonic Solids
- Pythagoras & the Music of the Spheres
- Ancient India’s MathArt: Rangoli, Mandalas & the Story of 1 – 9 & 0
- Zellige Moroccan Tiles & Other Tessellations
- Maya MathArt
Each lesson follows the same pattern with a Pre-lesson activity, the Main Lesson slide-show with downloadable study guides, live class videos (with the option to participate in a live class - should you want to), and links to extra topics and hands-on activities to use with your study.
The program keeps track of your progress, so you can restart where you left off, but you can also go back and review.
Awards will pop up to congratulate your student as they continue, and a printable completion certificate is also available.
My tester tried the live, recorded class first - this was not her favorite. Listening to the other students read text and answer questions did not appeal to her. However, when moving on to the interactive lesson with the DK-Let's Find Out!, and exploring on her own, she liked it much better. The printable Study Guide was a valuable addition. You can download the study guide, and the slide presentation and learn at your own pace.
The program takes advantage of the wealth of internet resources to teach with (how did we ever manage without it...) I appreciate how the author, Gloria Brooks, has made my job easy by compiling all the best into this program. As we visited each culture, we were introduced to not only the history, but the art, music and creative expression of the people. My tester got a huge kick out of hearing Sumerian sang out loud. :-) In each lesson, there are many options of activities - some are videos, some are downloadable templates or art projects. My tester was inspired to create her very own cuniform tablet in clay. Here's the "Bentz 2007" :
I love the variety, and the ability to customize to your family found in this program. I am not a "math person" myself, and I have several children who take after me in this area. It makes this subject much more enjoyable!
This is a great way to finish our school year. We plan to keep on exploring all through the summer. I have several older testers who were drawn in to see what we were up to - I know they'll enjoy it too. I love the connections it makes, this is how learning should be!
