Grammar doesn't have to produce dread... we've been using GrammarPlanet to sharpen our grammar skills.

GrammarPlanet is completely online, and designed for ages 10 and up.  We are huge fans of Analytical Grammar and Dynamic Literary products, our favorites hands-down!  GrammarPlanet is the newest program from the same great producers.

This comprehensive online program teaches all the fundamentals of grammar, punctuation and word usage.   It is great for newbies, struggling grammar students, and even for yourself!  That's right, I got a chance to test this one too.

The program currently has 13 self-paced units, with more being added weekly.  A total of 60 units will be included. You do need to work through the units sequentially, as the skills build on each other. The ideal is to work on the program 3 times per week, with short sessions.  The program is responsive to your ability, which means that it adjusts the number of practice sentences as you work through each unit giving you the extra practice you may need for mastery.  It also remembers your progress, and restarts you in the correct spot.

Each unit begins with a short video lesson, and printable student notes.  We have used Analytical Grammar for years, so we were familiar with one of our favorite teachers.  The lessons clearly teach the grammar concept of the unit, and students are encouraged to follow along with the printable notes.

The lesson consists of practicing the new grammar topic by parsing -  selecting and marking the part of speech of each word with interesting sentences.  Your student is learning a good bit of history and science while studying grammar in this program.  The program offers immediate feedback - showing you what you may have missed, and what the correct answer should have been.

If you make too many errors, the system will lock the unit, and send your parent an email notification.  To unlock, you simply login to your parent dashboard and allow the student to restart the unit.  I love this feature!  I really appreciate being able to see my students progress, and that the goal is always mastery.

After completing all the sentences in the unit, you get a detailed report of which practice sentences  you missed.

Each unit ends with a test.  You get the feedback on your test, after you have completed all the sentences.  

This is a challenging program, that really teaches high level grammar skills. My testers were on the younger side, but have been working in Analytical Grammar Jr.  They struggled with slowing down to really learn each concept.  I ended up unlocking the unit over and over.  While they were slightly frustrated, I was happy that they were forced to slow down, read carefully and re-watch the instructional videos. Eventually, the repetition paid off, and they moved forward without making the same mistakes.

Another thing I appreciate about this program is that it is distraction-free.  It truly makes the student focus only on learning the grammar concepts, not on playing unnecessary games. I used the program myself.  I found it highly addicting! I couldn't walk away until I had mastered an entire unit.  I understand grammar fairly well, and found that I made mistakes by not working slowly and carefully.  After a short while, my grammar skills have improved drastically.   This program is excellent for everyone wanting better grammar skills.
