She did it!

We have another Graduate of Bentz Academy!

So proud of this girl... she has truly excelled!  She's been a dancer, horse jumper, 4.0 GPA student and my "right hand" all through high school.  I'm sure that God has BIG plans for this world changer!

What an amazing GIFT!

I think she has a little of me in her...

Handing her the diploma was a privilege!  Matt would be so proud of his girl...

She was the first to decorate her cap (no surprise).  Esther 4:14 - "Perhaps you were born for such a time as this..."

Bentz Academy - students and alumni ❤️

She's off to join her brothers at UMHB as a nursing student!

Homeschooling has been my greatest investment, and my greatest reward!

Sparkling Bits of Writing Book 2 from Creative Word Studio: A TOS Crew Review

Sparkling Bits of Writing Book 2 from Creative Word Studio

Summer is a great time to sneak in some writing, and Sparkling Bits of Writing Book 2 from Creative Word Studio it the perfect way!

Creative Word Studio was created by homeschool parents with to help make teaching creative writing easier for you!  Sparkling Bits of Writing Book 1 for grades 5-6 and Sparkling Bits of Writing Book 2 designed for grade 7-8.

We have been exploring Sparkling Bits of Writing Book 2.  This book is spiral-bound with 75 creative writing lessons. Activities include; free writing, mini writing exercises, reading response, and revision practice.  I love the clean pages that have the simple black and white illustrations and plenty of writing space.

Here's a sampling of the lessons -

First, Mini Writing Lessons.  These are the "fun" kind of writing lessons.   Assignments like a personal profile, making lists, writing a new ending to a cliche, or writing a letter to a company to show dissatisfaction.  These are all "out of the box" ideas designed to get their minds moving and their pen flowing!

Free Writing is my testers favorite!  Simply set a timer (8-10 minutes) and then write whatever comes to your mind.  If you get stuck, keep writing... "What shall I write next, what shall I write next..." until you get unstuck.  If you've never tried free writing, you might be surprised!

Reading Response is the third style of writing in this book. These help you analyze other people's writing.  All of the selections are designed to help develop critical thinking skills as well.  Selections come from a variety of wholesome classics.  Learning how to express what you think about in writing is the goal.

She always holds her pencil on her forehead when she's thinking...

Some assignments are designated as "Gold Pieces" - these are mean to be edited and polished to your best effort.  It's also a piece that teachers can grade, and a handy rubric is included to help.

I love the variety of writing exercises, and the creative prompts, there are even "Friends lessons" to share together.

This is an easy to use, and well thought out creative writing program.  It's designed to be used as a supplement.  I think it would make a great stand alone unit on creative writing, and I think it's the perfect summer writing plan!

Graduation Quilt 4.0

Speaking of Graduation traditions, one of the most anticipated ones for my soon-to-be-graduate is the Graduation T-shirt Quilt!

I've been keeping t-shirts for each of them, and I think Selah may be the most excited.

It has come down to the wire...but, I finished it in time!

It's time for another stepping stone...

We're getting close to having another Bentz Academy Graduate!

Here's a couple of our "traditions" for our Graduate.

The Stepping Stone - I've made a simple concrete stepping stone for each of my graduates (some with feet, some with hands).

We decorate them with mosaic tiles.  They all line our path to the backyard.  Now I have 4 - that means I'm halfway done...

Heroes of History - Douglas MacArthur: What Greater Honor from YWAM Publishing: A TOS Crew Review

                                        YWAM Publishing

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew

I've been homeschooling for the past 18 years, and one resource I would never do with out has been YWAM Publishing! For this review - we are privileged to introduce you to Heroes of History- Douglas MacArthur: What Greater Honor and the Digital Unit Study companion.

At our first homeschool conference...way, way back, someone gave us a free copy of Gladys Aylward: Life of Adventure. We took it home and we were hooked! The very next year, I went straight to YWAM Publishing and purchased their entire set of both Christian Heroes: Then & Now and Heroes of History My dear husband never recovered from the shock that I bought "one of everything on the table." It has been one of my best purchases!

These stories have been LIFE CHANGING. All 8 of my children have grown up reading and listening to amazing stories of how God used ordinary people to change the world. One of our family sayings is "Someday, you will have a YWAM book".

Heroes of History- Douglas MacArthur: What Greater Honor is a great addition to any history study.  This series is designed for independent reading for ages 10 and up, but we love them as family read alouds.  All the titles are available in paperback or e-book format, or as well-done audio books on CD or MP3 download.

We received the softcover paperback (perfect for our collection) but, since we were about to take a road trip - we opted to listen to the audiobook.  WHAT AN AMAZING MAN!

Douglas MacArthur's life is one remarkable adventure after another, spanning WW1 and WW2 and after.

Time and time again, we would look at each other and say, "Can you believe this?" or simply, "Wow!"  From his determination to attend West Point, even after disappointment after disappointment trying to get accepted, to a daring ride on a railway handcar while being chased by the enemy, to his promise to return to help free the Philippines  and the Allied victory over Japan in the Pacific - it's inspiring to read how a single man was used by the Lord to help so many over the course of his life.

That's what I love most about these books - they introduce ordinary men and women that God uses to do extraordinary things.

The books have never failed to show us how God can use even just one person to change the world. Children need heroes to look up to, and YWAM Publishing has provided an entire series of them!

The Unit Study that goes along with this book is fantastic as well! It comes as a digital download full of great ideas that can help you use these books across your curriculum. It combines science, history, geography and more .

You can use the Unit Study to expand the learning.  The chapter questions make a great way to check for comprehension.  The Student Explorations give you great ideas for hands-on learning and projects. And the Books and Resources, Related Themes and Community Links sections are filled with other great ideas and ways to expand their learning!

These books, along with the Unit Study, make a GREAT way to study multiple subjects together.  I always say, "It's the one resource I would NOT homeschool without."

Each Unit Study also includes a handy section of reproducible sheets too.  The maps, fact sheets, and timelines can be used for as many students as you need.

I love how these books have ignited life-long interests for my family.  As we traveled, we stopped at a rest stop with some interesting historical information.  We were shocked to find a sign that was told about another WW2 group that was involved in the very battles we has just listened to with Douglas MacArthur: What Greater Honor.  I love it when the Lord coordinates my curriculum!

I HIGHLY recommend the Christian Heroes: Then & Now & Heroes of History series. One quick warning...don't let your family read these if you want them to live an ordinary life!
